Project Overview
An elementary school in the Hummelstown areacontacted Houck when they noticed visible deterioration across their building’s brick façade. This is a common issue for aging masonry structures exposed to long-term weather conditions. Over time, natural wear from the elements and the passage of time had compromised the integrity of the exterior.
In addition to failing mortar joints, the project uncovered several critical safety concerns, including a severely deteriorated dumpster wall and a window sill stone that had significantly degraded due to water damage.
Purpose & Objectives
The primary purpose of the project was to restore the structural integrity, safety, and longevity of the building’s exterior while maintaining its appearance.
Key objectives included addressing deteriorating masonry, eliminating safety hazards—particularly in areas accessible to children—and implementing long-term protective measures to prevent future damage.
Houck aimed to deliver an industry-standard solution executed with a high level of craftsmanship and attention to the client’s specific needs.
Scope of Work
- Repointed deteriorated mortar joints along the north face of the building
- Replaced a severely damaged window sill stone with a custom-fabricated unit
- Removed the failing dumpster wall that posed a safety hazard
- Installed a new chain-link fence and protective bollards for improved safety
- Applied a waterproofing treatment to the brick façade for long-term protection
Houck’s scope of work focused on the north face of the building, where masonry deterioration was most prevalent. The team repointed failing mortar joints throughout the affected areas and replaced the severely damaged window sill stone with a custom-fabricated replacement to ensure durability and proper water shedding.
Furthermore, the existing dumpster wall, which posed a significant safety risk, was fully removed and replaced with a chain-link fence and protective bollards to enhance safety.
Upon completion of masonry repairs, a waterproofing application was applied to the façade to protect the building from future moisture intrusion. The project progressed smoothly, with no unexpected challenges impacting the timeline or execution.
Results
The project successfully resolved all identified issues, not only meeting but exceeding the client’s expectations. The final outcome aligned precisely with the original plan, delivering both functional and aesthetic improvements without the need for scope changes.
Houck’s high-quality workmanship and tailored approach distinguished the project from standard repair efforts. This added long-term value for the client as they expressed a high level of satisfaction with the results, citing both the quality of the work and the overall experience.
