Veterans War Memorial
Monument Rehabilitation Project — Pennsylvania
Overview
Age and weather had battered this granite and marble memorial. The granite base mortar joints had failed, along with spalled granite faces.
Details
To properly repoint the mortar joints, Houck first removed the failed material to the proper depths. Craftsmen then repointed in multiple “lifts” of new mortar to prevent shrinkage cracking and used a compatible cementitious patching material to repair the deteriorated stone. Finally, Houck cleaned the masonry surfaces with a low-pressure wash.
